It need tested by not external heating, must be by internal thermal runaway. So this test is less meaningful

So fucking cool.!! Not the aisle that the fire originated but the one adjacent to that in racks sprinkler activates. No wander why inrack sprinkler so much needed in high piled storage. No wander why FM is the shit. Good job very impressive. I only design for city job basic commodities but this is so interesting .

The "pre-plan" and other plans at the FM insured QVC warehouse in Rocky Mount, NC didn't work out so well. According to the ATF report (which failed to find a cause for the fire), "The fire, now declared to be the largest structural fire in N.C. history, claimed the life of employee Kevon Ricks and destroyed approximately 75% of the 1.5 million square foot facility." Can't be sure, but from pictures it would appear the MFL walls held. Must have been a big loss for FM. I wonder who they blamed, probably the last engineer. The crap usually rolls downhill. Stupid reports from ATF and fire dept. fail to explain how fire got out of control.

At 0:11. If firm’s operations management turns off sprinklers before arrival of the fire brigade, might as well not call them. They will find a fire beyond their ability to intervene. This facility, or another just like it, went from pride of FM Global’s fire protection engineering prowess to a heap of burned rubble due to someone thinking they knew better. If there’s smoke, leave the valves ON.

I worked at FM for nearly 9 years as both a field consultant and account exec for engineering, and one of the most rewarding experiences was going to the Research Campus to witness testing. As part of our early training, they even sent us to the FM Global Fire-brigade training school, where our customers in very heavy industry/chemical, often in rural areas, could send their own fire brigade teams to learn how to fight specific industrial fires. One of my coolest experiences ever!! I would be interested for this side-by-side test, what commodity was tested, ceiling height (the moveable ceiling is adjustable up to 65ft), sprinkler K factor, and design (GPM/Sprinkler x Sprinklers used.(

Thank you for stating that these should be stored outside and away from the building. This video was very informative. We are seeing more and more of these plastic and single wall metal transportation IBC's at fixed facilities for use and storage of flammable and combustible liquids without a UL listing. The concern is the storage of flammable liquids with low flash points. In transportation, the metal IBC's are inspected every 5 years. Once they get to a fixed facility, they are no longer inspected. Then there is the question about bonding and grounding of the plastic IBC's for transfer of flammable liquids. I have not seen the last IBC you show with the double wall containment and top filling and dispensing.

Before I retired the company would have what they called a Worldwide Conference at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, (a Waldorf Astoria Resort). I'm not sure of the business purpose, but there was a lot of good food and drink for several days, and some activities. I went on the group bicycle tour. There were speakers, the best of which I recall the astronaut/air force officer/M.D. who related a precarious situation on a space station and some lady who climbed Mt. Everest on her second attempt. There was also a street artist and a pair of jugglers/comedians. These were insteresting people interspersed with boring FM managers who sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher to my mind. These "conferences" were pre-pandemic and attended by employees from all over the world. I'm sure it cost the company an astronomical fortune. There wasn't any work or real training to do, so it was almost fun within the tightly circumscribed world of work.

It was a pretty good company to work for, but I am so very glad I was able to retire early. I no longer worry about complaint emails, tedious report writing and long boring meetings and training that could have been handled with an email. An awful lot of fat could be trimmed from management ranks, but still they muddle through generally with pretty good results despite them.

I believe I released too much air during the monthly drain down or not fully turn off the water valve; I don’t know so I got a red light in my fire panel. Can you explain what triggered the panel light ? Was it the accelerator pushing the clapper up ( but after opening it chambers the clapper was close) or the air pressure switch.

ohhhh so this is why storage systems sometimes get designed with small hose connections around the racks. The idea must be for a rack to be controlled like this and for the FD to finish it up with a 1 1/2" connection. But still most FDs would probably just go in with a line from the pumper.

On February 9th, 1971, the Sylmar quake hit before dawn. I was 17 and was sure the Soviets nuked us. I had a bookshelf fall onto my bed along with everything on it smacking me everywhere. I tried to get to the living room in the dark and stepped in broken glass and fell over a wall unit that tipped over. Ever since then I made sure that I had automatic backup lighting in my houses. But for at least 10 days after the quake, everybody was afraid to sleep and was afraid to be in the house. Aftershocks hit randomly and the power was out for days. To keep myself busy, I made up a seismic gas shutoff valve out of my dad's 3/4 inch pipe plumbing parts, fiberglass, a 5/8'' steel ball bearing, o-ring, and bits and pieces. The ball bearing fit into a divot I ground at the end of the rod and any shaking would make it drop into the gas outlet hole with the o-ring as a seat. To reset the ball, the plunger rod had to be pulled down against a spring until the ball rolled back into the divot in the end of the rod. I got the idea from a pinball machine. After resetting, you screwed on a pipe with a cap on the end to cover the plunger on the bottom of the unit to make the reset system gas tight. There were a few house fires in Sylmar caused by hot water tanks falling over and that's why I thought of building something to prevent that. My dad was proud of my invention but said that nobody would buy one unless the insurance companies required them. I last saw the valve in the attic of my dad's garage after the cleanup a few months after he passed away in 2002. Sometime in the 1980's, I was disheartened to see a similar commercial one for sale in Builder's Emporium hardware store where Home Depot now sits. It had the same plunger reset mechanism. Our County requires seismic shutoff valves on new construction. I installed the square anodized blue one with the dial magnet reset on my house 20 years ago, probably before the Red Hat came along. I invented a few things in my lifetime but never made any money off of any of them. I look back and chuckle.
